CELESTIN FREINET SCHOOL in COLOGNE
It was 24 years ago (in 1986) that the teaching staff of our school made the decision to base our instruction on the Freinet pedagogy. Working together with parents we developed a school curriculum suited to the specific nature and circumstances of our school district, the Eigelstein quarter on the north side of the Cologne old town.
The Eigelstein quarter is a historic section of the city which today is home to children from many countries who speak a variety of languages. In an official ceremony attended by then-mayor Norbert Burger our school was christend on September 15th 1990 "Celestin-Freinet-Schule".
- our school is situated between Eigelstein street and the river Rhine and has around 120 pupils
- has three 1st, 2nd and 3th level classes:
the Pandas, the Bears and the Whales with 20-24 pupils each - one class from 1st to 4th level: the Eagles
- and one 4th-level classe: the Sharks
- features consistent instruction periods:
8:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. - groups of several levels are together in the same class
- offers supervised child care until 4/5 p.m in 5 groups
- provides integrated instruction for pupils with special needs
- classwork is oriented towards the children's living environment and interests.
- the children organize their learning schedule themselves with the help of work plans and in "class meetings"
- a focal point of our pedagogy is the promotion of writing ability. The pupils present their stories to the group, revise them and publish them in the class newspaper or include them in correspondence with a partner class.
- our pupils are proficient in the use of computers: they prepare and print their texts themselves, use CDs, search for information on the Internet and exchange e-mails with partner classes.
- special emphasis is placed on the development of music skills. In addition to music instruction we thus have 2 school choirs, an instrumental ensemble and 2 dance groups.
